Metaphor Detection through Term Relevance

چکیده
Most computational approaches to metaphor detection try to leverage either conceptual metaphor mappings or selectional preferences. Both require extensive knowledge of the mappings/preferences in question, as well as sufficient data for all involved conceptual domains. Creating these resources is expensive and often limits the scope of these systems. We propose a statistical approach to metaphor detection that utilizes the rarity of novel metaphors, marking words that do not match a text’s typical vocabulary as metaphor candidates. No knowledge of semantic concepts or the metaphor’s source domain is required. We analyze the performance of this approach as a stand-alone classifier and as a feature in a machine learning model, reporting improvements in F1 measure over a random baseline of 58% and 68%, respectively. We also observe that, as a feature, it appears to be particularly useful when data is sparse, while its effect diminishes as the amount of training data increases.

Metaphor Detection in a Poetry Corpus
Metaphor is indispensable in poetry. It showcases the poet’s creativity, and contributes to the overall emotional pertinence of the poem while honing its specific rhetorical impact. Previous work on metaphor detection relies on either rulebased or statistical models, none of them applied to poetry. Our method focuses on metaphor detection in a poetry corpus. It combines rule-based and statistic...
متن کاملAffect Detection from Open-Ended Improvisational Text
We report progress on adding affect-detection to a program for virtual dramatic improvisation, monitored by a human director. We have developed an affect-detection module to control an automated virtual actor and to contribute to the automation of directorial functions. The work also involves basic research into how affect is conveyed through metaphor. The relevance of the project to the sympos...

Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT, Lakoff & Johnson 1980; Lakoff, 1983, 1987, 1993, 2008, 2009), the most prominent cognitive approach to metaphor comprehension, argues that the nature of interconnections within the conceptual system is inherently metaphoric-analogical and that systematic patterns in linguistic metaphor reveal these cognitive interconnections. Relevance Theory (RT, Sperber & Wils...
متن کاملOn Pragmatic Inference and Metaphor from the Perspective of Relevance Theory
Relevance theory challenges the traditional view of context, proposes the concept of cognitive context and a new inferential model. Its explanation of metaphor from the cognitive perspective is rather different from other metaphor theories. By discussing relevance theory’s views on context and metaphor respectively, this paper, based on the researches of contemporary scholars and pragmatists on...
متن کاملDetecting novel metaphor using selectional preference information
Recent work on metaphor processing often employs selectional preference information. We present a comparison of different approaches to the modelling of selectional preferences, based on various ways of generalizing over corpus frequencies. We evaluate on the VU Amsterdam Metaphor corpus, a broad corpus of metaphor. We find that using only selectional preference information is enough to outperf...
